00:00:23>>Good afternoon, my name is
Ryan Burgess, I'm the
00:00:25assistant director at the Ohio
Development Services Agency,
00:00:30and on behalf of Governor
Kasich and director David
00:00:33Goodman I would like to
welcome you to our event
00:00:34today.

00:00:38is bummed that he's not here
today.
00:00:41He's a huge music fan and he
really wishes he could be here
00:00:44but he's out of town.
Held every October, and
00:00:48coordinated by Americans for
the Arts' National Arts and
00:00:50Humanities month, it's the
largest annual celebration of
00:00:54the arts and humanities in the
nation.
00:00:56For the fifth year in a row,
the Ohio Arts Council is
00:00:59partnering with the Ohio State
house to offer a series of
00:01:07free arts events in downtown
Columbus throughout the month
00:01:09of October.

Arts Council.
00:01:15Recognizing the significant
role the arts play in both the
00:01:18cultural and economic vitality
of the state, Governor Kasich
00:01:21has issued a proclamation
declaring October Arts and
00:01:27Humanities Month in Ohio.
His proclamation states:
00:01:32Whereas the month of October
has been designated and has
00:01:35been recognized as the
National Arts and Humanities
00:01:37Month by thousands of arts and
cultural organizations,
00:01:39communities, and states across
the United States, and whereas
00:01:43the arts and humanities stand
as a testament to the
00:01:46accumulative wisdom,
intellect, imagination and
00:01:49creativity of humankind, and
whereas the arts and
00:01:52humanities play unique roles
in the lives of our families,
00:01:56communities and country by
enhancing and enriching the
00:01:59human experience, and whereas
creative industries contribute
00:02:05more than 23.
6 billion to Ohio's economy
00:02:08annually while supporting 197
thousand jobs in Ohio every
00:02:12year, and generate 2.
4 billion in state and local
00:02:17tax revenues, and 1.
5 billion in federal tax
00:02:21revenues annually, now
therefore I, John R Kasich,
00:02:24governor of the state of Ohio,
do hereby designate October
00:02:282013 as Arts and Humanities
Month throughout Ohio, and
00:02:31encourage the residents of
Ohio to celebrate and promote
00:02:36the arts and culture in our
state on this first day,
00:02:40October 2013.
-John R Kasich, governor.
00:02:44And with that I am going to
turn it over to Julie to
00:02:47introduce today's
entertainment.
00:02:49Thank you.
>>Good afternoon, I'm Julie
00:03:00Henahan and I'm the executive
director of the Ohio Arts
00:03:02Council, and I'm so very
please to welcome you here
00:03:04today for the kickoff of
National Arts and Humanities
00:03:06Month here in Ohio.
I want to talk to you a little
00:03:10bit about Mojo- Mo' Mojo, I
knew I was going to do that; I
00:03:13was going to leave on of those
Mos off.
00:03:15Mo' Mojo is a hard driving,
high energy, Zydeco-based
00:03:20"Party Gras" band from Akron,
Ohio.
00:03:24This female fronted group
features three-part harmonies,
00:03:27accordion, fiddle, guitar,
rubboard, sax, trumpet, and
00:03:34harp, on occasion, I don't see
one today though, but bass
00:03:37percussion and drums, and
performs in both English and
00:03:39French.
Mo' Mojo takes Zydeco and
00:03:43Cajun music and infuses it
with Americana, reggae, rock
00:03:46and roll, funk, R'n'B, and
African and Latin rhythms.
00:03:51The band members joining us
today include Jen Maurer,
00:03:54Davidione Pearl, Will
Douglass, Anthony Papaleo,
00:04:02Kevin Johnson, Leigh Ann Wise,
Sam Rettman, and Paul Kovac
00:04:05. Mo' Mojo has played
throughout most of the
00:04:10Northeast and Midwest states
and is featured on the Ohio
00:04:14Arts Council's Ohio Artists on
Tour roster.
00:04:20Their recent release is called
Together in Love We Drown,
00:04:23with 14 original songs on it.
So please, welcome Mo' Mojo
00:04:26and have a great time.
Thanks for coming.

00:09:10Alright.
Hey, could you bring the
00:09:13accordion down a little bit,
yeah I'm afraid it might
00:09:16feedback here.
You all ready?
00:09:59The first time you left me
baby I felt so sad the second
00:10:04time you left me baby I lose

00:10:10that you've left me this last

00:13:07tell me why you made me cry
and said goodbye don't you
00:13:19know I love you so oh why'd
you go.
00:14:14>>Y'all allowed to dance in
here?
00:14:18>>I think during Arts and
Humanities month you're
00:14:20allowed to dance in all public
spaces.
00:14:23>>I think so too.
I think there should be some
00:14:25interpretive dance too, to
fully embrace all the arts.
00:14:28>>The thing is with Zydeco,
which is what we're doing,
00:14:30which is typically a Louisiana
music, that somehow worked its
00:14:32way to Ohio via a man named
Scott "Texas" Gann who was in
00:14:35our band.
We started the band back in
00:14:381995 and he passed in 2002,
but his girlfriend gave me his
00:14:43accordion so we'd keep the
band going.
00:14:47And Zydeco, it's a lot of
one-chord songs and two-chord
00:14:49songs, and the way that you
keep yourself entertained is
00:14:52by dancing.
We can't really do anything
00:14:55about the number of chords in
the songs.
00:15:00Here's a little song about
being from Ohio and playing
00:15:02Zydeco called I Know My
Business Too.
00:15:04And you all ready?
People I'm standin' 'fore you
00:15:36playin' that funky groove
called the Zydeco and it don't
00:15:40matter if I'm up here doin' it
in Ohio that sound straight
00:15:45from the bayous of Louisian'
sound oh so fine all the time
00:15:52in the hands of Mo' Mojo band
'cause I may not have been
00:15:57born pullin' but I'll prove to
you that I know just what I'm
00:16:04doin' you see I make that
groove I make it sound alright
00:16:09I make you move your body side
to side all night 'cause I
00:16:12know I know I know I know my
business too now if you come
00:16:27and criticize because I ain't
from your world then you
00:16:32better stop there and realize
that I'm a true Zydeco girl
00:16:36yeah you're right a whiter
shade of pale it don't make
00:16:39much difference to me 'cause
I'm here to stay best get out
00:16:43of my way as I bust into your
scene 'cause I may not have
00:16:48been born pullin but I'll
prove to you that I know just
00:16:55what I'm doin' you see I make
that groove I make it sound
00:17:00alright I make you move your
body side to side all night
00:17:03'cause I know I know I know I
know my business too well I'm
00:17:51proud to be a sister on the
stage and I'm doin' the Zydeco
00:17:55'cause it once may have been a
man's place but it ain't gonna
00:17:58be no more see I can push it
in and I can pull it out fine
00:18:04as you ever knew yeah a girl
know how to work the box in
00:18:10every venue 'cause I may not
have been born pullin' but
00:18:18I'll prove to you that I know
just what I'm doin' you see I
00:18:23make that groove I make it
sound alright I make you move
00:18:27your body side to side all
night 'cause I know I know I
00:18:30know I know my business too I
know my business too I know my
00:18:49business.
>>Thank you
00:19:12>>We want to thank
the Ohio Arts Council for
00:19:15inviting us down today.
It's a real treat to be asked
00:19:17to do this.
And the Ohio Arts Council
00:19:21wouldn't be the Ohio Arts
Council if not for the
00:19:24legislature of Ohio that funds
it, so we want to thank the
00:19:27legislature of Ohio for
supporting the arts.
00:19:31And we're going to do a little
song, we do try to, in our
00:19:38normal, longer performances,
do some traditional music and
00:19:43some songs in French, but
we're doing all originals
00:19:46today for you, showing that
we're trying to add to the
00:19:51genre.
And I don't have any originals
00:19:54in French, but some of our
songs are kind of blues based
00:19:56so here's a little song called
Tell Me Will You Ride.
00:19:58Tell me will you ride tell me
will you ride does this loving
00:20:24keep you satisfied I just got

and cold tell me will you ride
00:23:38tell me will you ride tell me
will you ride tell me will you
00:23:55ride.
This next song is a waltz.
00:24:33It's coming up on the
anniversary of the writing of
00:24:34it because I went for a
Halloween gig with a band and
00:24:37I came home and my dog had
died.
00:24:39And it was like oh my god, did
he die on Halloween, is his
00:24:42soul safe, or you know, was it
souls' day, or was it souls'
00:24:46eve, or what was it.
And here's a little song that
00:24:49came out of that because I was
worried for his future.
00:24:52So this is for Becker, it's
called Souls' Day Waltz.
00:25:03Oh my love where can you be
the fields are turning to
00:25:12brown oh my love where can you
be all color falls to the
00:25:23ground in the souls' day sky
is that where you fly while
00:25:32I'm left to throw down my
heart oh my love return to me
00:25:44I've lit a fire on the hearth
and oh my love where can you
00:27:32be the fields are turning to
brown oh my love where can you
00:27:44be all color falls to the
ground in the souls' day sky
00:27:58is that where you fly while
I'm left to throw down my
00:28:01heart oh my love return to me
I've lit a fire on the hearth

00:45:00I mentioned that guy who
helped form the band, Scott
00:45:02Texas Gann.
Back in 1995 he came up from
00:45:04Orange, Texas.
His step dad played the
00:45:07accordion, he was Cajun.
And he, and I, and another
00:45:14band member, Kip, wrote this
song.
00:45:17My Jolie my Jolie please don't
make me cry my Jolie my Jolie
00:45:33don't say goodbye without your
love I can see what a loss my
00:45:47life would be oh won't you
say, you'll always stay my
00:45:56sweet Jolie my Jolie, my
Jolie, please, don't make me
00:46:10cry my Jolie, my Jolie, don't
say goodbye and without your
00:47:58and without your
love I can see what a loss my
00:48:05life would be with your love
gone I can't go on my sweet
00:48:14Jolie my Jolie my Jolie please
don't make me cry my Jolie my
00:48:36Jolie don't say goodbye.
Now we've come to the title
00:49:10track of our album, Together
in Love We Drown, which came
00:49:12from an NPR radio thing that
talked about the state of the
00:49:14government back when Ronald
Reagan was in the office in
00:49:18Washington, and apparently
during that time, this is what
00:49:20the person told me on the
radio, most of the
00:49:22congress-people lived,
everybody lived in Washington,
00:49:24and so when they didn't get
along with their wives,
00:49:27because I guess mainly at that
time it was mostly male, sort
00:49:32of close to what it is now,
but mostly male, and their
00:49:34wives played tennis together
and their kids went to school
00:49:37together.
So no matter how hard you
00:49:38fought on the floor, you could
go have a martini.
00:49:41And I thought well that's
great, we need to start a
00:49:42movement to force our
Washington congress-people to
00:49:46go and live in Washington
again.
00:49:48Wouldn't that be nice.
And then I thought, well, it
00:49:50applies here in the state
house today, and so this is a
00:49:53song to implore the left and
the right to come together in
00:49:58the middle.
Together in Love We Drown, it
00:50:01comes from Sufism, you know,
drowning and the love the
00:50:03beloved.
It mentions the noble truths
00:50:05and our attachments from
Buddhism.
00:50:08And it's our theme song.
Send this out to all the
00:50:12legislatures of Ohio.
