The State of Ohio - Statewide Smoking Ban

After months of wrangling over the rules, the state's indoor smoking ban will be enforced starting May 3. But the group that put the statewide smoking ban on the ballot and the bar owners who opposed the ban have filed lawsuits over the exemption for private clubs and veterans halls. A statewide crackdown on strip clubs and other adult businesses has passed the Senate overwhelmingly, but somewhat silently. The state auditor and some Republicans lawmakers are backing a bill that they say will protect state agencies against the fraud and corruption that swept through the Bureau of Workers Compensation's investment division. But critics say there's a loophole.

Governor Strickland has proposed putting more money toward public colleges and universities. But to qualify for that money, colleges and universities have to agree to freeze tuition next year, and raise it by no more than 3 percent the year after that. Here to talk about the impact of the state budget on Ohio's colleges and universities Eric Fingerhut, the chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents, and Bruce Johnson, president of the Inter-University Council of Ohio.

Along with the governor's budget and a proposed ballot issue, there is another idea on school funding at the Statehouse, sponsored by Republican representative Jimmy Stewart of Athens, who represents some of the poorest school districts in the state.
