The State of Ohio - School Funding - Part 1

HEADLINES: Governor Strickland has given the green light to the $7.8 billion transportation budget. Attorney General Marc Dann is suing 10 makers of lead paint, and is also challenging four appointments to the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio. The AG was in court this week to defend Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, in a lawsuit challenging her power to remove the final member of the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections - Ohio Republican Party chair Bob Bennett. Brunner says there's a financial shortfall in her office thanks to her predecessor, former Republican candidate for governor Ken Blackwell.

ROUNDTABLE SEGMENT: Governor Ted Strickland has big plans for school funding. He says in the next two years, the state will provide almost 54 percent of the funding for local schools, the highest level of state funding since the Ohio Supreme Court ruling that the way Ohio pays for public education is unconstitutional. But Republicans, including House Speaker Jon Husted, have suggested that the governor isn't bringing any new money to schools, just changing the accounting methods. So what does this budget do for Ohio's schools, and what should it do? The first of a two-part conversation with Republican State Rep. Larry Wolpert, Russ Harris from the Ohio Education Association, and former state representative and Democratic candidate for governor Bryan Flannery.
