Just east of the John Bryan State Park in Greene County, Clifton Gorge cuts through layers of limestone, shale, and dolomite bedrock. Formed roughly 15,000 years ago by glacial melt-water, the scenic canyon currently houses a two-mile stretch of the Little Miami River.
From the early-to-mid 1800s, the northern portion of the gorge was populated by five grist mills, a textile mill, and a saw mill. In 1968, Clifton Gorge was registered as a national landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior. In 1973, 269 acres were dedicated to form the Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve.
Nowadays hikers and nature enthusiasts from all around visit the preserve to view the marvelous flora, sublime cliffs, and beautiful waterfalls of Clifton Gorge, one of the best examples of post-glacial erosion in Ohio.
