Politics Round-Up:

Republican candidates who will appear on the Ohio primary ballot next spring, Newt Gingrich is the most popular, according to a new poll from Quinnipiac University. Gingrich, Rick Perry and Mitt Romney are the only three GOP candidates who filed to run in the Ohio primary. Interesting battles are shaping up in three northeast Ohio Congressional districts. Incumbent Marcia Fudge faces a primary challenge from State Senator Nina Turner. In the 16th, incumbent Jim Renacci gets a challenge from Betty Sutton, whose seat evaporated in the redistricting process. Dennis Kucinich, who likewise lost his seat, faces incumbent Marcy Kaptur in the primary. Republican Senatorial candidate Josh Mandel surprised the Akron Press Club when he turned down an invitation to speak at the club's luncheon January 6. Senator Sherrod Brown will speak.

Cleveland Firefighters Taking Heat:

A city audit shows some Cleveland firefighters have been paid for hours they haven't worked; some have traded shifts with co-workers without repaying the missed time and supervisors have done a poor job of keeping track of payroll matters. Fire union leaders have said the city is using an archaic record keeping system and they would welcome an independent audit to determine whether systematic abuses occurred. The city is investigating to see if criminal charges might be brought.

Craigslist Killings:

Two suspects including an Akron man stand accused of luring victims to their deaths by promising employment. Authorities in Summit County plan to seek the death penalty against Richard Beasley, 52. Noble County authorities will bring adult charges against a 16-year-old being held in a Zanesville lockup. The two allegedly lured four men with promising job offers and then shot them. Three of the four died.
