Gas Boom or Bane?

A relatively new drilling method promises to unlock vast reserves of natural gas and create thousands of jobs in Ohio and neighboring Pennsylvania. But hydro-fracking has its critics who say it poses environmental risks and may lead to earthquakes. One Youngstown-area injection well being used to hold waste water from the process was shut down after a series of minor earthquakes.

Westlake Water

Suburban Westlake is considering withdrawing from the Cleveland water system and connecting with Avon Lake. Westlake officials are not satisfied with the level of service Cleveland is delivering, nor with recent rate increases. Cleveland officials think the suburb is underestimating the cost of the switch.

Mitt a Hit in New Hampshire

Mitt Romney solidified his lead in the Republican presidential sweepstakes with a win in this week's New Hampshire primary. Romney received 39% of the vote, Ron Paul 23% and John Huntsman 17%. Next up is the South Carolina primary. Romney is expected to keynote the annual Lincoln Day dinner in suburban Cleveland next month.

Second Thoughts

Akron-based Summa Health is ordering its employees to get flu shots or wear masks at work, whether or not they're involved in patient care. The hospital says vaccination is the most effective protection against contracting and spreading the flu. Beacon-Journal columnist Bob Dyer reports some employees object to the shots, others to wearing a mask all day.

Eisenhower Memorial Concerns

Architect Frank Gehry has designed a Washington D.C. memorial honoring President Dwight Eisenhower that's drawn fire from Eisenhower's family and from Plain Dealer columnist Kevin O'Brien, who feel the monument does not strike the right tone. The panel will discuss.
