The City Club of Cleveland established The Citadel of Free Speech Award to recognize a nationally prominent figure who has contributed significantly to the advancement and preservation of free speech as well as highlighting The City Club of Cleveland's continuing interest in and support of free speech.

The fourth recipient of the award is Ted Turner. Robert Edward "Ted" Turner III, is an American media mogul and philanthropist. He is known for founding the cable news network CNN, the first dedicated 24-hour cable news channel. He also founded WTBS, which pioneered the superstation concept in cable television. As a philanthropist, he is known for his $1 billion gift, which created the United Nations Foundation, a public charity supporting UN causes. Turner serves as Chairman of the United Nations Foundation Board of Directors.
