Leader, Ohio House Democratic Caucus, and District 27 Representative

Joyce Beatty, Ohio representative from District 27 (Columbus), was sworn in as leader of the Ohio House Democratic Caucus on Jan. 17, 2006. She is believed to be the first woman ever to lead Democrats in the Ohio House of Representatives. She will give the Democrats' view of politics in Ohio during this election year.

Health care and personal financial literacy have been among Beatty's legislative priorities since joining the House in 1999. Beatty is the sponsor of legislation that would encourage high schools to teach students about personal financial decision-making and consumer credit. She is a member of the Democratic Women's Caucus and the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus.

Beatty is a small businesswoman who owns Joyce Beatty & Associates, Inc., a strategic planning and diversity training firm, and Pieces for Wear, an upmarket clothing store in downtown Columbus. She is the founder of African-American Businesswomen CEOs (ABC), an organization that offers entrepreneurs the opportunity to network and create strategic alliances.

A native of Dayton, Beatty holds a bachelors degree from Central State University and a masters degree from Wright State University. In 2003, she was honored with an honorary doctorate from Ohio Dominican University.

Beattys community activities include the American Heart Association, the Columbus NAACP and the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, where she holds a lifetime membership. She is also former chairwoman of the Columbus Urban League Board of Directors.
