Representative Bill Batchelder (R-District 69) will take over as Speaker of the House January 3, 2010 and Representative Armond Budish (D-District 8) will assume the position of House Minority Leader. The two will discuss their plans to end partisan bickering and to address the state's projected $7.3 billion dollar biennial shortfall.

Representative William G. Batchelder returned to the Ohio House of Representatives in 2007, having previously served in the Ohio House for 30 years. He currently is serving his second consecutive term and was elected by his colleagues to serve as Minority Leader of the Ohio House of Representatives.

Representative Batchelder graduated from Medina High School in 1960. He later received a bachelor's degree from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1964, as well as a Juris Doctorate from The Ohio State University's College of Law in 1967.

Representative Batchelder has established a long career in practicing and teaching law. He spent 31 years of his professional career at the Williams and Batchelder Law Firm in Medina, Ohio, while serving as an adjunct professor of law at the University of Akron Law School and as an adjunct professor at Cleveland State University Levin College of Urban Affairs. Additionally, Representative Batchelder has served as a judge for the Medina County Common Pleas Court, a judge on the Ninth District Court of Appeals from 1999-2005, and as a presiding judge on the same court of appeals from 2000-2001.

During his tenure at the Ohio House, Representative Batchelder has been recognized in session after session with the coveted Watchdog of the Treasury Award. He also received the 4-H Meritorious Service Award and the Friends of 4-H award.

The Ohio State Volunteer Firefighters Association recognized his service to Ohio Firefighters throughout his career. For outstanding contributions to the wise use and management of the nation's natural resources, Representative Batchelder received the Conservation Legislators Award from the League of Ohio Sportsmen and the National Wildlife Federation.

Representative Batchelder is a member of the Ohio Farm Bureau, Medina County Township Association and the Grange. He is also a lifetime member of Vietnam Veterans of America and the American Legion. Representative Batchelder currently serves as a member of the Board of Governors of the Masonic Learning Center for Children - an organization that treats children with dyslexia. He is also an active participant in the Scanlon Inn of Court.

Representative Batchelder represents the 69th House District, which includes portions of Medina County. He currently resides in Medina with his wife, Alice. Together they have two children.

Armond D. Budish (D-Beachwood) is the Speaker of the House for the 128th Ohio General Assembly. He represents the 8th House District, which includes parts of the city of Cleveland and its eastern suburbs.

Speaker Budish obtained his Bachelor's Degree with honors from Swarthmore College near Philadelphia, PA, and then earned a Juris Doctor degree, Order of the Coif, from New York University Law School. After clerking for a federal judge in Washington, D.C., he joined the law firm Hahn Loeser and Parks in Cleveland.

In 1993, he founded the law firm Budish, Solomon, Steiner, & Peck in Beachwood, OH, where he is currently a partner. Speaker Budish is also host of the television show "Golden Opportunities," an informational program for seniors and their families, which can be seen Sundays on WKYC Channel 3 in Northeast Ohio. He has written several books, including most recently Why Wills Won't Work. He has written articles for many national publications and, for a span of almost 25 years, penned a column entitled "You and the Law," which was published by The Cleveland Plain Dealer and the Columbus Dispatch.
