City Club of Cleveland - Matthew P. Hoh

How Do We End America's Longest War? Mr. Hoh discusses the current conditions in Afghanistan, the impact of President Obama's withdrawal of U.S. forces over the next year and alternative options for the U.S. and international communities.

Matthew Hoh is a Senior Fellow at the Center for International Policy. The CIP was founded in 1975 to promote U.S. foreign policy based on international cooperation, demilitarization and respect for human rights. Matthew is also the Director of the Afghanistan Study Group, a network of foreign and public policy experts and professionals advocating for strategic change in Afghanistan.

Prior to his current position, Matthew Hoh spent two tours of duty in Iraq. Matthew was a Marine Corps Company Commander serving in Anbar Province from 2006-2007 and in 2004-2005 he was in Salah ad Din Province with a State Department reconstruction and governance team. When not deployed, Matthew worked on Afghanistan and Iraq policy and operations issues at the Pentagon and State Department from 2002 through 2008.

In 2009 Matthew was appointed the Senior Civilian Representative for the U.S. Government in Afghanistan. In September of that same year, Matthew resigned his post to protest the strategic policies of the United States in Afghanistan. In doing so, he became the highest-ranking U.S. Government official to renounce our foreign policy in Afghanistan.

The Council on Foreign Relations has cited Matthew's resignation letter from his post in Afghanistan as an Essential Document. In 2010 Matthew was named the Ridenhour Prize Recipient for Truth Telling.

Matthew's writings have appeared in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Defense News, the Huffington Post, USA Today, the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post.
