City Club of Cleveland - Immigration Reform

The recent decision President Obama's Justice Department to challenge Arizona's new immigration law once again places Immigration Reform in the center of the public policy discussion and the public's awareness.

This is not as far removed from our community as we might think - legislation has been introduced in Ohio to provide measures similar to the Arizona law and a Citizen's Initiative being drafted that, if successful, would place the issue before voters in 2011.

It is generally accepted by both sides of the aisle that Immigration Reform is very much needed and well overdue - the devil, of course, in the details.

Margaret Wong - nationally and internationally renowned attorney in immigration and nationality law. Margaret is the current co-chair of the Immigration Law Committee for the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, and chair of the Cleveland Bar Association's Immigration Law Section - and author of the book "Immigrant's Way".

Richard Herman, also a distinguished immigration attorney who is actively pursuing formation of the Cleveland Welcoming Center. Mr. Herman is also author of the book, Immigrants, Inc.

Stanley Miller, Executive Director of the Cleveland Chapter of the NAACP. The NAACP has come out solidly in support of immigration reform and Stanley has marched with others saying that immigration policy is fundamentally a matter of civil rights.

Representative Courtney Combs, (OH-54, Butler County), who has introduced two bills in the Ohio House to provide for stronger restrictions to immigration. Representative Combs and the Butler County Sherriff were recently in the Southwest visiting with legislative and law enforcement colleagues to learn first-hand about the challenges they face.
