City Club of Cleveland - Emma Fraser-Pendleton, Turnaround for Children

Emma Fraser Pendleton is a motivational speaker, author and Educator with experience in both the public and private school arena. She is currently a Project Manager for TurnAround for Children. Turnaround is an organization that addresses transforming schools into places that maximize student achievement. In her new role she serves as a leadership mentor for administrators, and trains school teams on how to address the social, emotional and academic needs of at-risk students in the New York City public school system.

She will be discussing the needed transformation of urban education. Her discussion will cover five key points:

* The crisis in urban education: What are the issues: Economics, the changing structure of the family and religious organizations, diverse student populations with tremendous needs; social and academic, school leadership, teacher preparation, state mandates and the lack of financial support to implement programs.
* The Promise & the Possibilities: What must we do and how can we do it? Provide comprehensive training for school leaders and staff in how to differentiate the curriculum to meet student needs.
* Provide training for parents on how to more effectively navigate the school system.
* Involve communities in the development and design of schools specific to the needs of their children.
* Seek greater funding and involvement from institutions and corporate America to finance schools that have the resources to hire and maintain the best qualified leaders and staff.

Her mantra is; "Down is only a temporary state from which the strong rise and shine." Raised in several foster homes, Emma spent thirteen of her formative years surviving the trauma of being a child subject to the extreme cruelties of life. Nevertheless, she has left those years behind and stands as a role model of resilience, determination, and "belief in God's power to change one's scares to stars, mess to miracles, and trash to treasure."

As a motivational speaker she has spoken in multiple forums on topics related to education, leadership development, group dynamics, and women's issues. Emma has appeared on radio and television speaking to the issues of domestic violence and women's rights.

Highlights of her career and public service include: Designing and implementing a self-esteem program for women living in shelters, Woman of Wisdom Award, Delta, Sorority, 2010, Distinguished Black Women Award, BISA, 2009, Honoree of the Barnes Historical Society, Queens Legend Award, 2004; The E.C. Reems Women's International Ministries Award, New York Chapter for Dedication and Service to Women Ministry, 1994; The Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership Award, 2005. She is the former tenured Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum for the Port Washington School District.

Emma is the recipient of several prestigious scholarships. In l989, she was awarded a full academic Fellowship to the Harvard Graduate School of Education. In l990 she was awarded an additional Fellowship by the Ford Foundation to continue her studies at Harvard.
