City Club of Cleveland - Community Revitalization and the Arts

Kevin Moore, who takes over as managing director of the Cleveland Play House this month, will discuss how partnerships among government, corporate, and non-profit arts entities can energize and revitalize a community.

Moore comes to Cleveland from Washington, DC, where he served as managing director of Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, a position he held since 1998.

During his tenure, Moore played a critical leadership role in the company's move from a small professional theatre working in a tiny garage space to a major player in the cultural landscape of the community, performing in an award-winning new theatre facility in downtown DC, the theatre company's first-ever permanent home. To fund this project, he worked with the board and staff to conduct a successful $9 million capital campaign, and personally led lobbying efforts that resulted in $2.5 million in financial support and tax abatement legislation from the District of Columbia government.

At Woolly Mammoth, Moore managed six consecutive seasons of balanced budgets while more than doubling the annual operating budget, and partnered with the artistic director to produce more than 40 plays, including 16 world premieres.

Prior to leading Woolly Mammoth, Moore served five seasons as director of marketing at La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, establishing new records for subscription and single ticket revenue and attendance.
