City Club of Cleveland - Anne Goodman, CEO, Cleveland Foodbank

Anne Goodman has been the President and CEO of the Cleveland Foodbank, the largest hunger relief organization in Northeast Ohio, since 1999. The Foodbank has a twelve million dollar budget and a staff of 76 employees and distributed over $30 million worth of food in 2009.

This mission of the Cleveland Foodbank is to alleviate hunger by providing food and support to community organizations that serve the hungry. Last year, the Foodbank provided more than 27 million pounds of food to over 450 hunger programs in six counties: this was enough food for more than 20 million meals. In the last ten years, the Foodbank's distribution has risen by 140%.

In 2006, the Cleveland Foodbank was named the 2006 Food Bank of the Year by Feeding America - The Nation's Food Bank Network. This is the most prestigious award given in food banking: the Cleveland Foodbank was selected from more than 205 food banks nationwide for its outstanding hunger relief efforts.

In 2005, the Cleveland Foodbank opened its new community food distribution center, which greatly enhanced the organization's capacity to provide nutritious food to local nonprofit agencies and the 160,000 clients they serve annually. Goodman oversaw the construction of the facility and a $10 million capital campaign to raise dollars for the project.

Goodman has been a leader in strategies to streamline services and reduce duplication of efforts in the hunger relief community. In 2003, Goodman served on a community-wide strategic planning committee that recommended consolidation between the Foodbank and the Greater Cleveland Committee on Hunger, which ran the Harvest for Hunger food and funds drive. The Harvest for Hunger campaign is now coordinated by the Cleveland Foodbank and it raised a record $2.9 million during the month of March, 2009. Dollars raised locally are used to make food available for free to our network of hunger relief organizations. In 2001, Goodman oversaw the merger of the Foodbank with Food Rescue of Northeast Ohio, another non-profit food distributor.
