How do we understand the past? When it comes to learning about history, "you're never gonna know everything you want to know," says Richard Shiels, an associate history professor at Ohio State University. Shiels also serves as the director of the Newark Earthworks Center. And when it comes to ancient history, he says, "most of the pieces are missing ... you put together the pieces and come up with the best interpretation you can."

The Newark Earthworks has been named one of the 70 wonders of the ancient world and is shrouded with its fair share of controversy and misinterpretation. Shiels visits Writers Talk to shed light on the significance of Ohio's ancient architectural wonders.
