The House version of Gov. John Kasich's two year, 55 billion dollar budget has passed that chamber, after hours of impassioned debate. Republicans praise it as responsible and transformational, while Democrats blasted it as "shameful" and an attack on the middle class.
Prison sentencing reform also passed the House, and just in time, says Gary Mohr, the director of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction. He talks about violence in Ohio's prisons, which he says is rising - and is also concerning Mike Brickner at the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio.
The House version of the budget preserves Gov. Kasich's plans to allow leases for drilling for oil and natural gas on state lands. The director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, David Mustine, talked about that proposal last week. Environmentalists are bitterly opposed, and Jack Shaner with the Ohio Environmental Council outlines their concerns about drilling and "fracking" in the state's parks.
