Gov. John Kasich passed a milestone this week - 100 days in office. The governor talked up his accomplishments in a little more than three months in office, but critics such as Ohio Democratic Party chair Chris Redfern are giving him poor reviews. Two Democratic lawmakers and the liberal policy group Progress Ohio have filed a lawsuit saying JobsOhio violates seven sections of the Ohio Constitution. The Ohio Supreme Court heard arguments this week on a complicated issue involving who can claim damages when public records are destroyed illegally. And for the first time in more than 130 years, Ohio State Fair visitors will be able to sip on wine and beer this summer.
One of the biggest items of note in Gov. John Kasich's proposed budget affects one of the largest state agencies - the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction. Kasich has proposed the privatization of five prisons for $200 million. But the budget also assumes some savings from prison sentencing reforms, which have been talked about for years but have never been pushed through. The director of the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, Gary Mohr, talks about the budget and the state's prisons.
It's certainly not too early to think about the presidential election of 2012 - just ask Barack Obama, Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, Tim Pawlenty, Haley Barbour and of course Donald Trump. With that in mind, an organization backed by politicians and lobbyists in both parties are pushing the states to pass legislation that would change the way electoral votes are awarded to the candidates. Tom Golisano, who founded the payroll processing company Paychex, is the spokesperson for the group National Popular Vote.
