The State of Ohio - Ohio's Economy, Ohio's Financial State, Recovery.ohiogov

The state's unemployment rate soared in January to 8.8%, up from 7.4% in December. But there's even more grim news buried in some jobless figures released this week - more than half of the state's 88 counties have jobless rates in the double digits. After a long battle in the Statehouse, a plan to pay bonuses to Ohio veterans of recent wars will likely go to the voters for a final decision. And lawmakers have taken action on competing plans to offer tax credits to attract the film industry.

Ohio's auditor says she's not getting the statements she needs from the governor's office to complete her review of the state's financial condition from last fiscal year - which ended nine months ago. And as of right now, Mary Taylor says, that puts the state in an unprecedented gray area when it comes to accounting for its money. But Gov. Strickland's budget director Pari Sabety explains there is a reason for this delay.

There are more than 3,000 projects in the transportation category that have been submitted to recovery-dot-ohio-gov, the website the state set up to take in applications for stimulus funding. Federal money will go to health centers in five Ohio cities, the Ohio National Guard, and the city of Columbus to keep 25 police recruits.

And there were two big events this week to note - State senators said goodbye to their colleague Tom Roberts of Dayton, who's leaving to take a seat on the Ohio Civil Rights Commission. And the state commemorated its 206th birthday this week with a speech from a man some consider a living legend - Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel.
