The State of Ohio - Casino Gambling

HEADLINES: The state has a new attorney general, at least for the next five months. State Rep. John Widowfield (R-Cuyahoga Falls) resigned amid allegations that he purchased Ohio State football tickets with campaign funds and resold them for a profit. The state schools superintendent Susan Zelman is leaving after 9 years of leading the state's primary and secondary education system. The Senate has overwhelmingly passed the $1.5 billion jobs package, but there may be a roadblock ahead before it goes to voters this fall. The capital spending bill is at a temporary standstill. Democrats in the House blocked an amendment related to the Great Lakes compact proposed by Republican Sen. Tim Grendell (R-Geauga County), which he says would strengthen private property rights. The Ohio House has passed a bill lifting the burden of proof from people who kill intruders in their homes or cars. Both chambers are expected to take a week off before coming back the second week of June. The Ohio Highway Patrol says six people were killed in six vehicle crashes over the Memorial Day weekend - that's the lowest number of people killed for a Memorial Day weekend in at least 38 years.

ROUNDTABLE SEGMENT: In 2006, when voters rejected expanding gambling with the Learn and Earn proposal, supporters of the concept had said it would be back - soon. And indeed, two years later, casino gambling could be on the ballot once again in November. Here to talk about the latest casino project is Dr. Brad Pressman, one of the partners in My Ohio Now. Also here is Tom Smith from the Ohio Council of Churches, which has continually opposed expanding gambling.
