The Sound of Ideas - Lawyers for the Indigent

Play

People charged with crimes have a Constitutional right to legal representation and when they can't afford it, the state provides a lawyer for them. In Cuyahoga County, judges often assign lawyers when defendants are arraigned on criminal charges. Prosecutor Tim McGinty has long pushed for reforming that system and Common Pleas Court Judge John Russo has agreed to let the Supreme Court review it. We'll lay out the process and discuss the concerns.

Guests:

Timothy McGinty, Cuyahoga County Prosecutor
John Russo, Common Pleas Court Administrative and Presiding Judge
Lewis Katz, CWRU Law Professor
Timothy Young, Director, Ohio Office of the Public Defender
Sean Malone, Attorney with Kohrman Jackson & Krantz
