The Ohio Statehouse, one of the best examples of Greek Revival architecture in the country, was constructed over a period of about 22 years, from the 1830s to 1861. Nathan B. Kelley, architect from 1854 to 1858, added the heating and ventilating systems, as well as indoor plumbing. His controversial ornamentation of the House Chamber led to his removal before the building was completed.
Recently, Capitol Square officials discovered that Kelley was buried in an unmarked grave in Columbus' Green Lawn Cemetery. It was agreed that something must be done to recognize his contributions to the Statehouse.
