Legislative Update - May 26 - May 30, 2014

This program gives Ohioans a weekly update on legislation brought up for third consideration in the Ohio Senate and House of Representatives during the week of week of May 26th.

The Ohio Senate passed Amended Substitute House Bill 85, sponsored by Representatives Terhar and Gonzales, enhancing the homestead exemption for military veterans who are 100% disabled from a service-connected disability.

Substitute House Bill 314 also passed. This bill, sponsored by Representatives Baker and Kunze, requires a prescriber to obtain written consent from a parent or guardian before issuing to a minor a prescription for a controlled substance that contains an opioid.

House Bill 399, sponsored by Representatives Sheehy and Sprague, also passed this week, designating the first Friday of May as "Prescription Drug Abuse Awareness and Education Day."

Sponsored by Representative Scherer, Amended Substitute House Bill 492 passed this week, providing authorization and conditions for the levy and administration of taxes.

Also passing this week was Substitute Senate Bill 54, sponsored by Senator Kearney and Senator Eklund, requiring a mammography facility to include certain information in the mammography report summary sent to a patient if the patient's mammogram demonstrates the presence of dense breast tissue.

Substitute Senate Bill 272 also passed, sponsored by Senators Cafaro and Eklund. This bill designates March as "Ohio Maple Syrup Products Month."

The Senate also passed Substitute House Bill 117, sponsored by Representatives Hackett and Stinziano, providing for the operation of captive insurance companies in Ohio and special purpose financial captive insurance companies.

Sponsored by Representative Smith, Amended Substitute House Bill 341 also passed this week, establishing requirements to be followed by prescribers in reviewing patient information in the State Board of Pharmacy's Ohio Automated Rx Reporting System.

Substitute House Bill 493, sponsored by Representatives Sears and Henne, passed this week, revising Ohio's Workers' Compensation Law.

Senate Bill 234 passed as well, sponsored by Senator Hughes, designating a portion of Interstate Route 670 as the "Dana G. 'Buck' Rinehart Highway."

Amended Senate Bill 288 passed this week, sponsored by Senator Eklund. This bill creates the Volunteer Police Officers' Dependents Fund.

The Ohio Senate also passed Senate Bill 300. Sponsored by Senator Beagle and Senator Faber, this bill designates September as "Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Month."

Sponsored by Senator Manning, Senate Bill 336 passed this week, converting the part-time judgeship of the Avon Lake Municipal Court into a full-time judgeship.

In the Ohio House of Representatives, Substitute Senate Bill 310 passed this week, sponsored by Senator Balderson, making changes to the requirements involving renewable energy, energy efficiency, and peak demand reduction.

Also passed was Amended House Bill 511, sponsored by Representative Sears, relative to health insurance coverage for dependent grown children, small business employees, and volunteer firefighters.

Sponsored by Senator Bacon, Substitute Senate Bill 140 passed this week, making changes to the law governing insurance companies.

Substitute Senate Bill 287 also passed this week, sponsored by Senator Hughes, modifying authorized investments of interim moneys and inactive moneys under the Uniform Depository Act.

Amended House Bill 494 passed as well. This bill, sponsored by Representative Schuring, authorizes the use of county regional transportation improvement projects.
