This is your Legislative Update for the week of June 2nd.
The Ohio Senate passed Substitute House Bill 362, sponsored by Representatives Scherer and Derickson making changes to the law regarding teacher performance evaluations and authorizing the STEM Committee to grant a designation of STEM school equivalent to a community school or chartered nonpublic school.
Substitute House Bill 129, sponsored by Representative Stautberg, passed this week, specifying that the lawful definition of menacing include words or conduct that are directed at or identify a corporation, association, or other organization.
Amended Substitute House Bill 130 passed this week. Sponsored by Representative Fedor, this bill modifies court procedures and criminal offenses associated with human trafficking and enhances the penalty for soliciting.
Substitute House Bill 171, sponsored by Representatives McClain and Patmon, passed this week. This bill permits public school students to attend and receive credit for religious instruction conducted off school property during regular school hours.
Amended Substitute House Bill 213, sponsored by Representatives Celebrezze and Pelanda, also passed, modifying numerous laws regarding custody of abused, neglected, or dependent children.
Substitute House Bill 264, sponsored by Representatives Wachtmann and Barnes, passed, regarding care for students with diabetes in schools.
House Bill 286, sponsored by Representatives Sears and Letson, authorizing the Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council to meet via interactive video conference or teleconference, passed as well.
Amended Substitute House Bill 292 was passed. This bill, sponsored by Representative Perales, creates the Ohio Aerospace and Aviation Technology Committee.
Substitute House Bill 366, sponsored by Representative Sprague, passed, requiring hospice care programs to establish policies to prevent diversion of controlled substances that contain opioids.
Sponsored by Representatives Baker and Landis, Substitute House Bill 393 was passed. This bill requires public high schools to publish annually education and career exploration information, including access to the OhioMeansJobs web site.
Substitute Senate Bill 177, sponsored by Senators Skindell and Hughes, relative to protection of companion animals in protection orders, also passed.
Substitute Senate Bill 276 passed this week. Sponsored by Senators Jones and Tavares, requiring the Department of Health to establish the Safe Sleep Education Program, hospitals and freestanding birthing centers to implement an infant safe sleep screening procedure, and certain entities to adopt an internal infant safe sleep policy.
Also passed was Senate Bill 281, sponsored by Senators Cafaro and Schiavoni, designating the month of May as "Bartter Syndrome Awareness Month."
Substitute Senate Bill 207 passed as well, sponsored by Senators Patton, Manning, Turner and Tavares, regarding the parental rights of a person who was convicted of or pleaded guilty to rape or sexual battery.
Amended House Bill 105, sponsored by Representative Hayes, designating the calendar week including the seventeenth day of July as "Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Week," passed.
Substitute House Bill 309 also passed this week, sponsored by Representatives Pelanda and Antonio, relative to charging and collection of fees in connection with protection orders and interpreters.
Amended Substitute House Bill 486, which also passed and was sponsored by Representatives Baker and Stebelton, makes changes to the coordination of workforce development and economic development programs and provides death benefits to survivors of volunteer police officers killed in the line of duty and disability benefits to disabled volunteer police officers.
