Deadline Now - 1-13-2017 - Issues facing Toledo's Black Community

In April, it will have been forty-nine years since Martin Luther King, Jr. was shot dead on a hotel balcony in Memphis, Tennessee. His birthday, which we observe this coming Monday, has been a federal holiday for more than a quarter century. They days when merely belonging to the NAACP could get a man lynched are also long past. America has twice elected a black president. Yet the African-American community has not overcome every obstacle. Black average incomes still significantly trail the national average. Black rate of poverty and unemployment are higher than average. Two months ago, America elected a president who many African-Americans fear may turn back the clock. As we approach this year's MLK celebration, what are the issues facing Toledo's black community? What is the role of today's NAACP?
