Columbus Metropolitan Club - Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Contemporary Art, but Were Afraid to Ask

Arthur C. Danto, art critic and Johnsonian Professor of Philosophy, Columbia University;
Helen Molesworth, chief curator, Wexner Center for the Arts

Contemporary art is extraordinarily challenging for even the most interested and engaged art lover. Why is that? National Art Critic Arthur Danto and Wexner Center Curator Helen Molesworth discuss what is difficult, important, yet very rewarding for those willing to explore the world of contemporary art.

One of the most influential art scholars and philosophers or our time, Danto is an international acclaimed critic and professor. With a B.A. in Fine Arts from Wayne State University, and both a masters and a doctorate of philosophy from Columbia University, he began teaching there in 1951 and became a full professor in 1966. Today, Danto is the Johnsonian Professor of Philosophy Emeritus at Columbia.

Danto also serves as Art Critic for The Nation, as well as editor for the Journal of Philosophy. He is the author of numerous books and essays including: After the End of Art, The Abuse of Beauty, Beyond the Brillo Box, and Transfigurations of the Commonplace. Danto is the recipient of many fellowships and grants including two Guggenheims, an American Council of Learned Studies and a Fulbright. Danto is a member of the Wexner Center's International Arts Advisory Council, a distinguished group of artists and arts professionals who convene annually to select the Wexner Prize recipient.
