Michelle Norris, host, NPR's All Things Considered

Premier of CMC Documentrary, The Conversation Begins, Produced by WOSU Public Media

Michele Norris, host of National Public Radio's All Things Considered will deliver a strong message of free speech to CMC's 30th celebration audience.

Norris will attest to the importance of "community conversation" from a perspective of "Point-and-Click" journalism. She'll explore journalism's intricate relationship with and reliance on the Internet for information gathering and how it has altered the practice of journalism - for better or for worse. Information that used to take six phone calls to track down might just as easily be available online these days.

Norris believes the easy access to information yields a faster story turnaround, but it also means fewer "accidental discoveries" - stories that turn up expectedly in the course of conversation while doing old-fashioned legwork. Similarly, public discussions such as those at CMC forums surface questions and ideas that might otherwise go unheard.

The celebration begins with the debut of a WOSU-produced documentary featuring CMC Founders Mary Lazarus, Phyllis Greene, Lou Briggs, Dorothy Reynolds, Harriet Bracken, Sally Bloomfield, as well as other CMC leaders throughout the years.
