Blue Butterflies: Migration Across America

On view at Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens through September 21
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Blooms & Butterflies exhibit at the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. To complement the colorful and exotic butterflies and tropical haven that inhabit the indoor garden, Indiana-based artist Tasha Lewis transforms the Conservatory's gallery with thousands of magnetic cyanotype butterflies printed on cotton fabric. Her blue butterflies hover in mid-air and seem to swarm the space, blurring the connection between the natural and artificial worlds.

Globe Trot

Globe Trot is an international crowd-sourced dance film project. Mitchell Rose, professor of dance filmmaking at The Ohio State University teamed up with OSU choreographer Bebe Miller who developed a dance with steps simple enough for non-dancers to execute, and then embarked on a 15-month journey to find participants across the world. The effort culminated in a 3-minute dance film, with contributions from 54 filmmakers in 23 countries spread among all 7 continents. The aim: To illustrate the equality of humanity through the democratization of dance.

Artist Profile: Daric Gill

Daric Gill considers himself an "interdisciplinary artist" but he makes clear that he doesn't dabble. His formal training is evident, whether through his illustrations and oil paintings or kinetic sculptures and custom furniture pieces. He's the artist behind the popular series ToeHeads, which line the walls of the eating space at COSI. He chats with us from the Columbus Idea Foundry, where he works on his large-scale projects.

Pilot Dogs

Pilot Dogs began in Columbus in 1950 and shortly thereafter moved into its home in the heart of Franklinton where they've been ever since. The non-profit organization trains dogs to assist individuals with vision impairments, and each new puppy-recruit starts rigorous training at about one year of age. Once the dogs successfully master their skills, they are then paired with their new master. They'll spend up to 4 weeks living together at the Pilot Dogs facility, getting to know one another and learning each other's habits, before starting out on their new journey together. We chat with dog trainers and administrators to learn a little more about how this program works.
