Sojourner Truth was born a slave in New York, but gained freedom when she walked away from her master in 1826, one year before the state abolished slavery in 1827. She was born with the name, Isabella, but she took the new name of Sojourner Truth when she began her crusade to bring "truth" to the American public.

She is portrayed by Annette Jefferson , a member of educational storytellers known as "We've Known Rivers."
