Applause - Green Spaces

On today's show we'll look at some gardening taking place in Northeast Ohio along with some green spaces getting a make over with art.

But first, there's a great garden experience taking place at Stan Hywet Hall thanks to a little magic from Akron's Grizzled Wizard, PR Miller. This self-proclaimed junk-yard artist has transformed trash into a vast collection of outdoor flowers and bugs that delight and educate visitors of Stan Hywet Hall and Garden.

As anyone who's ever gardened can tell you, it's no easy task going from seed to the dining table - preparing the soil, planting, weeding, and harvesting is hard work for most seasoned gardeners. So what in the world would motivate a group of tender-foot teenagers from Cleveland put on a pair of overalls and pick up shovels and begin digging around in the dirt? Here's a taste of the Cleveland Botanical Garden's Green Corps from ideastream® Producer Dennis Knowles.

The corner at East 118th and Buckeye Road, once known only as a place to hang out and as a bus stop on the RTA line, is now known for something much more - a park - thanks in part to a collaboration between Cleveland Public Art, Park Works and the Buckeye Area Development Corporation that set out to transform this corner into a green space for the neighborhood. Recently the final piece to the puzzle was set in place by artist James Simon.

The final stop on our green garden experience takes us to downtown Cleveland where artists Peter North and Alissa North of North Design, along with Cleveland Public Art, are working to transform Mall B into an organic art space. When the installation of natural grasses and native plants matures they'll reflect upon a time when Lake Erie was bustling with cargo ships that helped build Cleveland while expressing the hope of a greener city.
