Applause - Apollo's Fire December 25, 2008

During this time of year it's not unusual to spot a jolly fat man flying over Northeast Ohio with the aid of eight tiny reindeer. But old Saint Nick isn't the only one who's mastered the power of flight. At the Beck Center on Cleveland's west side, there's a young boy who refuses to grow up and takes flight thanks to magic pixie dust. We'll preview the performance of Peter Pan.

On stage, Peter Pan takes everyone to new heights with the help of magic pixie dust. For others, the holidays can be just as stimulating. Lots and lots of Christmas decorations let the world know just how full of yuletide cheer they are. But these days, inflatables - or blowups - make the decorating process even easier, giving some Christmas enthusiasts more ways to express themselves. We'll have the story from ideastream® producer Caitlin Johnson.

As we hunker down for three more months of winter weather, there's no better way to warm things up than with a little music from Cleveland's Baroque Orchestra, Apollo's Fire. Taking their name from the Sun and Music Gods, Apollo's Fire is dedicated to performing the music of the 17th and 18th century on instruments from that period. Recently Music Director Jeannette Sorrell brought her troupe to the Idea Center¿ at PlayhouseSquare to record in the Westfield Insurance Studio Theater for an upcoming television special on WVIZ/PBS. You can catch some of those performances online now on YouTube. However, we'll see it the old-fashioned way, as Apollo's Fire performs the music of Vivaldi.

While the baroque music of Apollo's Fire is often grand and dramatic, the sounds of the principal flautist for The Cleveland Orchestra, Joshua Smith, are more light and airy. His playing has been described as "close to perfection" by the New York Times, while the Boston Globe calls him a "masterful soloist." Well, earlier this year, Josh released his first chamber music release for Cleveland's Telarc records. The CD is appropriately titled Air and Joshua Smith joined host Dee Perry recently in the KeyBank studio to perform for Around Noon, and we'll share some of that performance with you.

With two million lights, 300 displays and at two miles long, the Blossom Holiday Lighting Festival is one of the largest holiday displays in the area. You might see everything from a partridge in a pear tree, to your favorite cartoon characters during this driving tour along the grounds of the Cleveland Orchestra's summer home. Plus, the feast of twinkling colors is guaranteed to put a smile on the grumpiest old Grinch. Take a look at this winter wonderland put together by ideastream's Dave Staruch, and from all of us at WVIZ/PBS and 90.3 WCPN, happy holidays!
