All Sides with Ann Fisher - 5-16-2023 A - The basics of state constitutional amendments

Play

When the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last summer, activists across the country looked to state laws and, where available, state constitutions for change.

In Ohio, abortion rights supporters are gathering signatures to get abortion rights enshrined in the state constitution. And abortion rights opponents are working to make that harder to achieve

Ohio is one of several states where Republicans are working to make it harder for citizens to amend the state constitution, in large part to derail another proposal to enshrine abortion rights in the constitution. The way House Republicans went about it, though, has raised legal questions.

Meanwhile, both sides are mobilizing a get-out-the-vote push for the special August election on the issue.
